On Wednesday, April 21, the ASG met for their weekly Board of Directors meeting.

Several funding requests were on the agenda. Chiefly among them was from the BC Veterans’ Association. Four members and the faculty advisor came equipped with detailed and well-organized plans to help them plead their case.

In May, the Veterans’ Association has coordinated an elaborate event in observance of Memorial Day. To cover the expenses the Association asked for $1,685.

The event will be held around the flagpole, is open to all students and will feature food and guest speakers.

Upon reviewing the details of the request, the Board felt it would be a good idea to cut the cost allotted for food.

An amendment was presented to bring the request down to $1,160. The amendment passed, and the revised amount was open for discussion.

“It’s a very important event for everyone, I don’t think its something only students should be paying for,” said Environmental and Social Responsibility Rep. Carolyn Dewitt.

Dewitt would like to see other members of the community contribute money for the event.

President of the Veterans’ Association Pete Smith continued to point out the importance and relevance of the event. He also made it known they have tried numerous other places to collect the funds.

“Everyone that comes to us is in the same situation,” said Dewitt.

“This makes up one fifth of the [remaining] budget and there are still three months left,” said VP of Finance Chapman Chung.

“We really respect the work that you’ve done, but we have limitations,” said Root. The motion carried unanimously to fund the Association $1,160 for their event.

Amnesty International’s funding request followed. They asked for $120 for their upcoming trip to UW to participate in the “Sleep Out to End Malaria” rally. The money would be used to cover bus fare for the participants.

After hearing about the prior fundraising attempts that totaled $73, the Board voted to fulfill the additional request.

As time ran short, the by-law discussion was pushed until the followingweek.
